Uganda is a premier destination for sport fishing, home to some of the world’s largest freshwater game fish, including the legendary Nile Perch, which can exceed 100kg (220lbs).

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day trip from the airport or a multi-day rugged expedition, here are the top fishing spots and what you need to know.

1. Top Fishing Destinations

  • Murchison Falls (The Nile River): Often considered the “holy grail” of fishing in Uganda. You fish from the rocks below the world’s most powerful waterfall or from boats in the pools downstream.

    • Target: Giant Nile Perch and Catfish.

  • Lake Victoria (Entebbe & Ssese Islands): Perfect for day trips or multi-day island hopping. Trolling with lures is the most common method here.

    • Target: Nile Perch (5kg–80kg) and Tilapia.

  • Lake Mburo National Park: A more serene experience where you can catch Tilapia from the banks or a boat while surrounded by hippos and zebras.

  • Sipi Falls (Mount Elgon): The only place in Uganda for Rainbow Trout fishing in the cool, high-altitude streams.

2. Logistics & Permits

Fishing in Uganda’s National Parks requires specific authorization:

  • Murchison Falls: A fishing permit costs approximately $50 per day or $150 for four days (in addition to park entry fees).

  • Lake Mburo: Permits are much cheaper, around $5–$10 per day.

  • Policy: Most reputable companies operate on a “Catch and Release” policy to preserve the trophy fish populations.

3. Essential Packing List for Fishing

The heat on the water can be intense, and the Nile is famous for its biting flies.

  • Clothing: Long-sleeved linen shirts and trousers are a must. Stick to light colors (beige/khaki) as dark blue and black attract Tsetse flies.

  • Gear: While most operators provide tackle, serious anglers often bring their own:

    • An 8–11ft rod for the Nile.

    • 60–80lb braided line for the “big ones.”

    • Strong lures (e.g., Rapala Super Shad Rap) with upgraded treble hooks.

  • Health: High-SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a hat with a neck flap.
