The Complete 2026 Guide to a 3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trek with Afraeka Adventures

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. For many UK, US, and EU travellers, trekking to see them is the reason to visit Uganda. At Afraeka Adventures, we’re a Kampala-based tour operator that designs and runs 3-day Bwindi gorilla treks end-to-end. From your first WhatsApp message to your return drop-off in Entebbe, we handle the logistics so you can focus on the experience. This guide breaks down exactly what a 3-day trek with us looks like in 2026, how permits work, which sector to choose, and how we make Uganda feel safe and simple for first-time visitors.

Who is Afraeka Adventures?

We’re a Uganda-registered operator based in Kampala. Our team runs gorilla treks, classic game-drive safaris, chimpanzee tracking, birding safaris, and cultural experiences. What sets us apart:

Direct UWA Permit Coordination: We work directly with Uganda Wildlife Authority to secure your Bwindi gorilla permit. No hidden third-party fees.

Small Group Travel: We cap groups at 8 for trekking. You get more time with your guide and a quieter forest experience.

International Traveler Support: Entebbe Airport pickup, Uganda eVisa guidance, and 24/7 WhatsApp support on +256794144988 before, during, and after your trip.

The 3-Day Bwindi Itinerary: Day by Day

This is our most requested trip because it fits a tight schedule without rushing.

Day 1: Kampala/Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your Afraeka guide meets you in Kampala or Entebbe. We drive southwest, stopping at the Equator for photos. The route passes tea plantations, rolling hills, and local markets. You’ll arrive in Bwindi by late afternoon for lodge check-in, briefing, and dinner. Bwindi sits at altitude, so evenings are cool.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day
After an early breakfast, we drive to the UWA park headquarters for registration and a safety briefing. Rangers assign you to a gorilla family based on fitness and group size. Treks range from 1 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas nested the night before. Once you find them, you get one hour to observe. No touching, no flash, 7 meters distance. You’ll watch silverbacks, juveniles, and infants in the wild. After the trek, return to your lodge to rest.

Day 3: Culture or Nature, Then Return to Kampala
Option 1: Batwa Cultural Experience. Walk with Batwa community members near Bwindi. Learn forest skills, storytelling, and traditional music.
Option 2: Nature Walk. A guided forest trail for birds, butterflies, and plants.
After lunch, we drive back to Kampala or Entebbe for your onward flight.

Buhoma vs Rushaga: Which Sector Should You Pick?

Bwindi has 4 trekking sectors. We operate most in Buhoma and Rushaga because they have the best infrastructure for international travelers.

Buhoma: The oldest sector. Easier road access from Kampala. Gentler terrain for first-time trekkers. Good lodge range.
Rushaga: Famous for 4 habituated families, including the large Bikingi group. Steeper trails, but higher chance of seeing multiple families if you add a second trek.

Tell us your fitness level and dates. We’ll recommend the best sector when we check UWA availability for you.

Permits, Timing, and Availability in 2026

UWA issues a limited number of gorilla permits per day per sector. That’s why Bwindi feels exclusive.

When to book: For peak months June-August and December, we recommend booking 3-6 months ahead. Shoulder months March-May and October-November are quieter, with greener forests and fewer crowds.

What’s included with Afraeka: UWA gorilla permit processing, 2 nights lodge B&B, private 4×4 transport from Kampala/Entebbe, fuel, driver-guide, park entry fees, and ranger fees. We also give you a detailed packing list and fitness tips 30 days before travel.

Is Uganda Safe for UK and EU Travelers in 2026?

This is the #1 question we get. Bwindi is in southwest Uganda, far from border areas with travel advisories.

On the trek: Every group has armed UWA rangers. Trails are patrolled daily. You trek in small, managed groups.
Health: Yellow fever certificate is required for entry. We share FCDO/CDC guidance and malaria prevention tips before you travel.
On the road: Your Afraeka driver-guide knows the route, road conditions, and reliable stop points. Vehicles are 4×4 and tracked. We also monitor UK FCDO, US State Dept, and EU travel updates weekly and will brief you before departure.

What to Pack for Bwindi in 2026

Bwindi is a rainforest. It can rain any month.
Essentials: Waterproof jacket, long hiking trousers, sturdy hiking boots, gardening gloves for nettles, gaiters, daypack with rain cover, 2L water bottle, insect repellent, and a waterproof cover for your camera/phone.
Pro tip: Hire a porter at the trailhead. It’s affordable, supports the local community, and saves your energy for gorillas.

Combine Gorillas With More of Uganda

Most clients add 2-4 days. Popular combos with Afraeka:

  1. Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale: 1 day, permit included. Kibale has 13 primate species.

2. Murchison Falls Safari: 2-3 days. Game drives, Nile boat cruise, and rhino tracking at Ziwa.
