1. Uganda Visa Requirements: Who is Exempt?
If you hold a passport from one of the following countries, you are exempt from applying for a visa prior to arrival:
COMESA Member States: Angola, Comoros, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
East African Community (EAC): Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania.
Other Exempt Nationalities: Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cyprus, Fiji, Gambia, Grenada, Jamaica, Lesotho, Malta, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Vanuatu.
While many nationalities are exempt, the standard Uganda visa requirements apply to the majority of international visitors. It is crucial to verify your specific status against the official Uganda visa requirements before booking your flights, as arriving without proper authorization will result in denied boarding.
Any other exemptions may be specified by immigration officials upon arrival.
2. How to Apply: Step-by-Step Uganda Visa Requirements
To successfully submit your application via the official portal, follow these four (4) mandatory steps:
Step 1: Choose Application Type – Select whether you require a Visa or Permit. Choose the category (Ordinary, Multiple-Entry, Diplomatic/Official, Transit, or the East Africa Tourist Visa) and the appropriate subcategory (e.g., single-entry, multiple-entry for 6–12 months, or up to 24–36 months).
Step 2: Fill the Electronic Form – Complete all personal, passport, and travel details accurately.
Step 3: Add Required Documents – Upload scanned copies of the mandatory documents (see detailed list below).
Step 4: Submit & Pay – Submit your application and complete the online payment.
After Submission: Your application will be reviewed by an Immigration Officer. Please note that additional information may be requested during the approval process. If required, you can submit the new information electronically by checking your status at https://visas.immigration.go.ug/#/check.
3. Required Documents for the Uganda Visa Application
To avoid rejection or delays, ensure you have the following documents ready in digital format (PDF or JPEG):
Valid Passport Bio-Data Page: Must be an official, genuine international passport with a validity of not less than 6 months from your intended date of entry into Uganda.
Recent Passport-Size Photograph: A clear, colored photograph taken within the last 6 months against a white background.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate: Mandatory proof of vaccination against Yellow Fever (required for entry into Uganda).
Recommendation Letter: If applicable to your specific travel purpose.
Police Clearance Certificate: Required for certain visa categories (e.g., work or long-term permits).
4. Uganda Visa Requirements: Processing Timeline & Validity
Understanding the timeline is critical to ensuring a smooth entry:
Processing Time: All visas, permits, and passes are generally approved within two (2) to three (3) working days. Special circumstances may require additional document verification, potentially extending this timeline.
Recommended Application Window: Applicants are strongly advised to apply at least five (5) working days before their intended date of travel to account for any unforeseen administrative delays.
When to Submit: You should only submit your application within 3 months of your departure date from Uganda.
Visa Validity: An approved E-Visa is valid for three (3) months starting from the issue date. Travel authorization does not guarantee entry—travellers are subject to secondary verification at the port of entry where the visa sticker will be affixed to the passport.
5. Types of Visas Under Uganda Visa Requirements (Fees)
Here is the breakdown of the different visa categories available:
A. Uganda Ordinary/Tourist Visa
Purpose: Holiday, tourism, or visiting friends/family.
Duration: Single entry for a maximum of 3 months; Multiple entry for a maximum of 6 months.
Extensions: Longer durations can be applied for at the Immigration Office in Kampala.
Official Fee: $50 USD (Paid online via the official portal).
B. East African Tourist Visa (EAC)
Purpose: A joint initiative allowing travel between Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda with the same multiple-entry visa to boost regional tourism.
Eligibility: Open to tourists from any country of origin.
Duration: Valid for 90 days (multiple entry to the three countries).
Movement Rules: The holder must enter the region from the country that issued the visa and can move between the three countries without applying for another visa. Movement out of and back into these countries is allowed within the 90-day validity.
Work Prohibition: Work is not permitted on this visitor/tourist visa.
Extension: The East Africa Tourist Visa cannot be extended.
Important Note: This visa does NOT grant entry into the United Republic of Tanzania, Burundi, or South Sudan.
Official Fee: $100 USD per visa.
C. Diplomatic and Official Government Visas
For US Government Officials: Must submit a Note Verbale from the US Department of State detailing the official’s details, purpose of travel, host institution, and period of stay.
For Non-US Citizens on Official Business: Must submit a Note Verbale from their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Diplomatic Mission accredited to the United States.
Fee: No processing fee is charged for this category.
Submission: Forward documents with cover Notes Verbales to the Uganda Embassy between 09:00 to 14:00 hrs, Monday-Friday.
D. Additional Services Available on the E-Visa Portal:
The official portal also facilitates applications for: Entry Permits / Work Permits, Student Passes, Special Passes, Dependant’s Passes (if the principal’s Work Permit was obtained electronically), Certificates of Residence, and Dual Citizenship Certificates.

URGENT FRAUD / SCAM WEBSITE WARNING
The Government of Uganda warns all travellers about fraudulent websites that illegally claim to offer e-visa services. The official correct fee is $50 USD** for standard tourist visas. Scammers charge inflated “processing fees” ranging from **$110 to $200.

Official Site: Bears the Ugandan Coat of Arms and DCIC Logo and provides options for Diplomatic, Ordinary, EAC, Transit, Multiple-Entry Visas, Work Permits, Dependant Passes, Student Passes, Special Passes, and Certificates of Residence (Total: 4 application steps).
Fake Sites: Usually only provide Tourist, Transit, and Multiple Entry visa options (Total: 3 application steps). They lack the official government branding.
