Why Fly to Bwindi Instead of Driving

The drive from Kampala to Bwindi takes eight to ten hours of driving time, and most itineraries split it across two days. That is two full travel days out of your trip, plus the cost of an overnight stop, meals, and fuel.

Flying compresses the journey to under two hours in the air. For travellers on a short gorilla trekking trip, that saving alone often justifies the flight. For travellers on longer itineraries, the decision is more of a trade-off between time and ground cost.

The flights are also scenic. You pass over the Equator, the crater lakes of Fort Portal, the Kigezi Highlands, and in clear weather you can see the Virunga volcanoes to the south.

The Two Airstrips That Serve Bwindi

Bwindi has no airstrip of its own. There are two you can fly into, and which one you use depends on which sector of the park your permit is booked for.

Kihihi Airstrip (for Buhoma and Ruhija)

Kihihi sits in the far south-west of Uganda, close to the Congolese border. It serves the northern and central sectors of Bwindi.

  • Buhoma trailhead: roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by road from Kihihi
  • Ruhija trailhead: roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by road

Kihihi also puts you within reach of the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is useful if you are combining Bwindi with a game drive on the way out.

Kisoro Airstrip (for Rushaga and Nkuringo)

Kisoro is a small town in the far south-west, at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. It serves the southern sectors of Bwindi and is also the access point for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

  • Rushaga trailhead: roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by road from Kisoro
  • Nkuringo trailhead: roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour by road

If your itinerary includes golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga, or a Rwanda extension through the Cyanika border, Kisoro is the more practical arrival point.

The rule of thumb: check your gorilla permit. It will state which sector you are trekking in. Book your flight to match.

Departure Airports: Entebbe or Kajjansi

Flights to Bwindi depart from one of two airports in the Kampala area.

Entebbe International Airport

Entebbe is the country’s main international gateway, about 40 km south of Kampala. If you are arriving on an international flight and connecting straight through to Bwindi, Entebbe is the natural departure point. It is also the only airport with immigration and customs, so onward domestic flights leave from the same terminal.

Kajjansi Airfield

Kajjansi is a small airfield about 20 km south of central Kampala, on the Entebbe road. If you are already staying in Kampala, Kajjansi is far more convenient than driving down to Entebbe. Most charter operators base their light aircraft at Kajjansi.

Flight Times and Typical Schedules

Domestic flights to Bwindi are operated by light aircraft, typically single-engine Cessnas or similar. Flight times vary slightly depending on the aircraft, routing, and number of intermediate stops.

  • Entebbe or Kajjansi to Kihihi: approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Entebbe or Kajjansi to Kisoro: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes

Most operators run one or two departures per day in each direction. Morning departures are the norm, both because of weather and because they align with the afternoon arrival and check-in at your lodge before dinner.

Some flights make an intermediate stop, often at Mbarara or Kasese, to pick up or drop off passengers. This can add thirty to forty-five minutes to your total journey. Ask your operator whether the flight is direct or has stops.

Luggage Rules Kampala to Bwindi Flight

This is the part of the trip that catches most travellers out. Light aircraft have strict weight and space limits, and the rules are non-negotiable.

  • Soft-sided bags only. Hard-shell suitcases cannot be loaded into the cargo compartments of most light aircraft. Use a duffel bag or soft holdall.
  • Strict weight limit per passenger. The exact figure is set by the operator and varies by aircraft. Confirm this with your booking agent before you fly.
  • Excess luggage can often be stored. Most operators can store your main suitcase at their Entebbe or Kajjansi base, and you collect it on the way back. Ask when booking.
  • Hand luggage is minimal. A small daypack or camera bag that fits under your seat is usually fine, but check with your operator.

If you are travelling with camera equipment or a drone, declare it in advance. Some operators and the Uganda Wildlife Authority require permits for certain gear, and drones are heavily restricted in and around national parks.

Weather and Delays

Light aircraft in Uganda operate under visual flight rules, which means the pilots need to see where they are going. Weather, not mechanical issues, is the main cause of delays.

  • Morning flights are more reliable. Afternoon cloud build-up over the highlands can force cancellations or reroutes.
  • Rainy season delays are more common. March to May and October to November see more cancellations.
  • Build in a buffer. If you are flying to Bwindi the day before your trek, this is rarely an issue. If you are flying on the morning of your trek, leave at least one buffer day.

If your flight is cancelled, operators usually reroute you on the next available flight or arrange a road transfer as a fallback. Travel insurance that covers domestic flight disruption is worth having.

What Happens When You Land

Both Kihihi and Kisoro airstrips are small and informal. There is no terminal building, no baggage carousel, and no duty-free. You walk off the aircraft, collect your bag from the wing, and meet your driver.

Your lodge or tour operator will arrange a pick-up. The transfer from the airstrip to your lodge takes between forty-five minutes and two hours, depending on which sector you are staying in. This transfer is almost always included in a package itinerary.

The road from either airstrip to the Bwindi trailheads is murram, and can be rough in the rainy season. Vehicles are usually 4x4s with good clearance. If you are prone to motion sickness, take precautions before the drive.

Flying Versus Driving: Which Is Right for You

Fly if:

  • Your itinerary is short, three to five days total
  • You are combining Bwindi with a Rwanda extension and want to avoid a long road loop
  • You have mobility concerns or limited tolerance for long drives
  • You want to maximise time in the forest rather than on the road

Drive if:

  • You have a longer itinerary and want to see Lake Mburo, Mbarara, or Kabale en route
  • You are travelling as a group and can share a vehicle
  • You want to combine Bwindi with a wider Uganda road circuit
  • You want the flexibility to stop for photography along the way

Many travellers do a mix: fly in to save time, drive out to see more of the country on the return. This works well on seven to ten day itineraries.

How to Book Your Flight to Bwindi

Domestic flights are not sold on public booking platforms in the way international flights are. You have two options.

  1. Book directly with the domestic operator. Several operators run scheduled services between Entebbe, Kajjansi, Kihihi, and Kisoro. Their schedules vary by season and demand.
  2. Book through your tour operator. This is what most travellers do. The flight is bundled into your safari package alongside the permit, lodge, and ground transfers, so you have one point of contact if anything changes.

If you book independently, confirm three things before paying: the exact airstrip, the weight limit for luggage, and the cancellation policy for weather delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the flight from Entebbe to Bwindi?

About one hour fifteen minutes to one hour thirty minutes to Kihihi, and one hour thirty minutes to one hour forty-five minutes to Kisoro, depending on the aircraft and routing.

Which airstrip should I fly into for Bwindi?

Kihihi serves Buhoma and Ruhija in the north and centre of the park. Kisoro serves Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south, as well as Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Check your permit for the sector.

Can I fly directly to Bwindi from another country?

Are Bwindi flights reliable?

Yes in the dry season, with caveats in the rainy season. Morning departures are far more reliable than afternoon ones. Build in a buffer day if you are flying the morning of your trek.

What happens if my flight is cancelled?

Operators will typically reroute you on the next available flight, or arrange a road transfer as a fallback. Travel insurance that covers domestic flight disruption is strongly recommended.
