Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge Review: The Honest Verdict

Last updated: 30 September 2026. Property details and inclusions change — confirm current information with the lodge or your operator before booking.

Disclosure: Afraeka Adventures can book Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge for clients. This review is written to be useful whether you book through us or not, and it says plainly where the lodge is not the right choice.

Short answer: Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is a high-end lodge on the Nkuringo escarpment in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It is best known for three things: its position directly above the Bwindi forest, the views of the Virunga Volcanoes on clear mornings, and its role as the natural base for gorilla trekking in the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors. It suits travellers who want a quiet, upmarket base with the best views in Bwindi and who are trekking from the southern sectors. It does not suit travellers trekking from Buhoma, budget travellers, or anyone wanting a central location between the park’s four sectors.

Bwindi has four gorilla trekking sectors — Buhoma in the north, and Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south and east. Where you stay matters more at Bwindi than at almost any other Ugandan park, because the sectors are hours apart by road and your permit ties you to one of them. Clouds sits in Nkuringo, on the escarpment above the southern edge of the forest, and that location shapes everything about the stay.

This review covers what Clouds is actually like — the location and why it matters, the rooms and facilities, the food and service, who it suits and who it does not, and how it compares with the other lodges on the Bwindi circuit. It is a companion to our Buhoma sector gorilla trekking guide, which covers the northern sector and its lodges in the same detail.

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge review — key facts

  • Sector: Nkuringo, southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Setting: Escarpment above the forest, with views of the Virunga Volcanoes
  • Positioning: High-end / upmarket
  • Best for: Trekkers with permits in the Nkuringo or Rushaga sectors
  • Not ideal for: Buhoma-sector trekkers, budget travellers, families with very young children
  • Nearest trekking sectors: Nkuringo (minutes), Rushaga (roughly an hour)
  • Nearest towns: Kisoro, Nkuringo trading centre
  • Access: Road from Kabale or Kisoro; not on the Buhoma side of the park
  • Climate: Cool and often misty — altitude and evening temperatures matter here

What is Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge?

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is an upmarket lodge on the Nkuringo escarpment, on the southern boundary of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It sits above the forest at around 2,000 metres, looking south and west toward the Virunga Volcano chain, and it is one of the small group of high-end properties on the Bwindi circuit.

Its defining characteristic is the view. On a clear morning — and Nkuringo is often misty, so clear mornings are not guaranteed — the Virunga Volcanoes are visible across the valley, with the Bwindi forest falling away below. This is not a lodge where the view is a marketing line. It is the reason the property exists where it does, and it shapes the whole stay.

The second defining characteristic is the location’s trekking logic. Nkuringo is one of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors, and the lodge is minutes from the Nkuringo trailhead. Travellers whose permits are for Nkuringo have one of the shortest transfers to a trailhead in the whole park. Travellers whose permits are for Rushaga are roughly an hour away. Travellers whose permits are for Buhoma are on the wrong side of the park entirely.

Everything else about the lodge — the rooms, the food, the service, the atmosphere — needs to be understood against those two facts. It is a view property and a Nkuringo-sector property. That is what it sells, and that is what it delivers.

Where is Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge?

Clouds is in Nkuringo, in the far south-west of Uganda, on the escarpment above the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It sits close to the Nkuringo trading centre and the Nkuringo trailhead, and it is reached by road from either Kabale (roughly two to three hours) or Kisoro (roughly one hour).

Three location points matter for planning:

  • It is on the southern side of Bwindi, not the Buhoma side. Buhoma, the northern sector, is a five to seven hour drive from Nkuringo. The two are not interchangeable. If your permit is for Buhoma, do not book Clouds. If your permit is for Nkuringo or Rushaga, it is a strong choice.
  • It is close to Mgahinga. Nkuringo is roughly one to two hours from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which makes Clouds a natural base for travellers combining Bwindi with golden monkey trekking or a second gorilla trek at Mgahinga.
  • It is close to Kisoro for onward travel. Kisoro is the nearest town with an airstrip, banks and onward connections, including the Cyanika border crossing into Rwanda.

The escarpment position also means the microclimate matters. Nkuringo is cooler and mistier than the northern sectors, the evenings are cold enough for a warm layer, and the views that define the lodge are weather-dependent. Travellers should arrive expecting atmosphere rather than guaranteed panorama.

The wider southern-sector picture — including the Mgahinga family — is on our Nyakagezi gorilla family guide.

What are the rooms and facilities like?

The accommodation at Clouds is in individual stone cottages spread across the escarpment grounds, each positioned for the view. The style is upmarket but not glitzy — natural materials, fireplaces for the cold evenings, and a layout that prioritises privacy and outlook over communal bustle.

What travellers can reasonably expect:

  • Private stone cottages with en-suite bathrooms and fireplaces — the fireplace is not decorative; Nkuringo evenings are genuinely cold
  • Escarpment views from the cottage terraces, with the forest and the Virunga chain beyond
  • A main lodge area for dining and lounging, with a terrace facing the view
  • Limited capacity — this is a small property, not a large hotel, and the atmosphere reflects that
  • Cool-climate comfort — hot water, warm bedding and proper insulation matter more here than at lowland lodges

Fact-check required before publishing: confirm current cottage count, exact room categories, bathroom configuration, whether power is 24-hour or generator-limited, and whether Wi-Fi is available in rooms or only in the main area. These details change and must be verified against the lodge’s current information.

The honest assessment of the facilities is that they are comfortable and well-suited to the climate, with the view as the centrepiece. Travellers who want a large resort with a pool and extensive facilities will find Clouds more intimate and more focused than they expect. Travellers who want a quiet, private base with a view and a fireplace will find it delivers exactly that.

What is the food and service like?

Food at Clouds is table-service, set-menu style, using a mix of local produce and imported staples, and it is generally well-regarded relative to the mid-range Bwindi lodges. The setting — meals served facing the forest and the volcanoes — is a genuine part of the experience rather than an afterthought.

Three things travellers should know:

  • Meals are often set-menu rather than à la carte. Dietary requirements need to be communicated in advance, not on arrival. Vegetarian, halal, and allergy requirements are usually manageable with notice.
  • Service is personal rather than institutional. Small properties in remote locations tend to be staffed by a stable team, and the service reflects that — attentive and familiar rather than corporate.
  • The remote location constrains the menu. Some ingredients are trucked in from Kabale or Kisoro, and short-notice requests are harder to accommodate than they would be in Kampala. Advance notice solves most of this.

Fact-check required before publishing: confirm current dining arrangements, whether meals are included in the rate, whether drinks are included or charged separately, and whether packed breakfasts are provided for early trekking departures. Trekking days start early and this last point matters.

Is Clouds the right base for gorilla trekking?

Clouds is the right base for gorilla trekking if your permit is for the Nkuringo sector, and a reasonable base if your permit is for Rushaga. It is the wrong base for Buhoma. That single question — which sector is your permit for — determines whether Clouds is the right choice more than any other factor.

Two further points on the trekking side:

  • Nkuringo trails are among the steepest in Bwindi. The Nkuringo sector is known for its elevation change and its demanding terrain, more so than Buhoma. Travellers who have chosen Nkuringo for the landscape should be prepared for a harder trek than the northern sector offers, and should hire a porter.
  • Rushaga is roughly an hour away. If your permit is for Rushaga, Clouds is workable but not ideal — you will be leaving very early to reach the trailhead. Travellers whose permits are for Rushaga should also consider lodges closer to that sector.

The permit itself anchors everything. Current categories and booking information for the gorilla permit sit on the gorilla permits Uganda page, and permit availability by sector should be confirmed before any lodge is booked.

Afraeka tip: Book the gorilla permit first, then the lodge. Because the permit ties you to a sector, booking the lodge before confirming the permit risks ending up at Clouds with a Buhoma permit — the single most common and most avoidable mistake on the Bwindi circuit. Confirm the sector, then match the lodge to it.

Who is Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge best for?

The Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge review verdict depends entirely on the traveller. It is an excellent choice for a specific kind of trip and a poor choice for several others, and the fit matters more than the property’s quality.

Clouds is a strong choice if you are…

  • Holding a gorilla permit for the Nkuringo sector
  • Wanting an upmarket, small, quiet lodge with the best views in Bwindi
  • Combining Bwindi with Mgahinga for golden monkeys or a second gorilla trek
  • Comfortable with cool, misty mountain conditions and steep trekking trails
  • Wanting a private, romantic or celebratory setting
  • Planning onward travel via Kisoro or the Rwanda border

Look elsewhere if you are…

  • Holding a gorilla permit for the Buhoma sector — the drive is five to seven hours
  • On a budget — this is a high-end property and there are good mid-range options in every sector
  • Travelling with very young children — the altitude, the cold and the trail difficulty all work against it
  • Wanting extensive resort facilities, a pool, or a large social atmosphere
  • Trekking from Rushaga and wanting to minimise pre-dawn driving
  • Wanting a central base for all four Bwindi sectors — no lodge offers that, and Clouds is one of the furthest from Buhoma

The clearest way to state it: Clouds is a destination lodge at the southern end of Bwindi, and it rewards travellers whose itinerary already points south. Travellers whose itinerary points north should book in Buhoma instead. The southern-sector options are covered on our Kibale and Bwindi combined safari guide.

How does it compare with other Bwindi lodges?

Clouds sits in the top tier of Bwindi accommodation, alongside the other high-end properties on the circuit. The comparison that matters is not which lodge is “best” in the abstract — it is which lodge matches your permit sector, your budget tier and your taste.

FactorClouds (Nkuringo)Typical mid-range Bwindi lodgeTypical budget Bwindi lodge
PositioningHigh-endMid-rangeBudget
SettingEscarpment, volcano viewsVaries by sectorVaries; often near trading centres
RoomsPrivate stone cottagesStandard rooms or bandasBasic rooms or tents
Best sector fitNkuringo, RushagaSector-dependentSector-dependent
AtmosphereSmall, quiet, privateMixedMixed, often more social
FacilitiesFocused, not extensiveStandard lodge facilitiesMinimal

Comparison is qualitative and intended to show positioning, not to rank individual properties. Rates vary by season and by booking channel.

Two things follow. First, Clouds competes on view and privacy rather than on facilities — travellers expecting a resort will be surprised. Second, the lodge tier matters less than the sector fit. A mid-range lodge in the right sector beats a high-end lodge in the wrong one, every time, because the permit is the fixed point of the trip.

Travellers weighing Bwindi against Mgahinga for their gorilla trek should also read our comparison of the two parks, and travellers still deciding between countries should see the Uganda vs Kenya safari guide.

How do you book Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge?

Clouds is booked either directly with the lodge or through a tour operator, and the booking sequence matters more than the booking channel. The sequence is: confirm the gorilla permit and its sector first, then match the lodge to the sector, then arrange the transfers.

Booking sequence

  • Confirm the gorilla permit — sector, date, paid in full
  • Match the lodge to the permit sector (Nkuringo or Rushaga for Clouds)
  • Book the lodge — cottage category and nights
  • Arrange transfers — from Kabale, Kisoro, or onward from Buhoma if changing sectors
  • Confirm dietary requirements and packed-breakfast needs in advance
  • Arrange the Mgahinga add-on if combining parks
  • Confirm porter and gear arrangements for the trek

Two practical points. First, Nkuringo fills early in the peak dry-season months because it is a small sector with limited high-end capacity — book the lodge and the permit at the same time, not sequentially. Second, if you are booking through an operator, confirm whether the rate includes park fees, trekking transfers and drinks, because high-end lodge rates vary in what they bundle.

The current permit framework and booking windows are set out on the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s own site and on our gorilla permits page linked above. The wider set of guided primate activities in Uganda is on the primate tracking experiences page.

Common mistakes with a Clouds booking

Most of what goes wrong with a Clouds booking comes down to sector mismatch and expectations, not to the lodge itself.

  • Booking the lodge before the permit. The permit determines the sector, and the sector determines whether Clouds is viable. Booking the lodge first is the single most common and most expensive mistake on the Bwindi circuit.
  • Choosing Clouds with a Buhoma permit. The drive between Nkuringo and Buhoma is five to seven hours. This is not a minor inconvenience; it is a trip-breaking error.
  • Expecting a resort. Clouds is a small, view-focused property without extensive facilities. Travellers expecting a pool and a large common area will be disappointed.
  • Underestimating the cold. Nkuringo sits at around 2,000 metres and the evenings are cold. Pack warm layers regardless of the season.
  • Assuming a clear view. Nkuringo is often misty. The volcano views are a genuine possibility, not a guarantee, and travellers should plan around that.
  • Not flagging dietary needs in advance. Remote properties work on set menus. Short-notice requirements are hard to accommodate.
  • Underestimating the Nkuringo trek. The sector’s trails are among the steepest in Bwindi. Fitness and a porter matter more here than in Buhoma.
  • Booking a Rushaga permit and staying at Clouds. It is workable but it means a very early start. Travellers with Rushaga permits should also look at lodges closer to that sector.

Frequently asked questions

Is Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge worth it?

For travellers with a Nkuringo or Rushaga permit who want a small, upmarket lodge with the best views in Bwindi, yes. For travellers with a Buhoma permit, no — the drive makes it impractical regardless of quality. The fit matters more than the property.

Which Bwindi sector is Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge in?

Clouds sits in the Nkuringo sector, in the far south-west of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, on the escarpment above the southern edge of the forest. It is minutes from the Nkuringo trailhead and roughly an hour from the Rushaga sector.

How far is Clouds from Buhoma?

Roughly five to seven hours by road. Nkuringo and Buhoma are on opposite sides of the park and the drive between them is long. Travellers with Buhoma permits should not book Clouds.

Can you see the Virunga Volcanoes from Clouds?

Yes, on clear mornings. The Virunga chain is visible across the valley from the lodge. Nkuringo is often misty, so the view is a possibility rather than a guarantee, and it varies by season and by day.

Is Clouds suitable for families?

It is better suited to couples and adult groups than to families with young children, mainly because of the altitude, the cold evenings and the difficulty of the Nkuringo trekking trails. Older teenagers comfortable on steep ground would be fine.

What is the altitude at Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge?

Around 2,000 metres. The evenings are cool, and travellers should pack warm layers regardless of season. The altitude is not high enough to cause altitude sickness for most people, but it does make the trekking trails feel harder than the distance suggests.

How do you get to Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge?

By road from Kabale (roughly two to three hours) or from Kisoro (roughly one hour). Travellers coming from Buhoma or the northern sectors should plan a full day. There is no airstrip at Nkuringo; the nearest is at Kisoro.

Should I stay at Clouds for a Rushaga permit?

It is workable but not ideal. Rushaga is roughly an hour from Clouds, which means a very early departure on trekking day. Travellers with Rushaga permits should also consider lodges closer to that sector before deciding.

Planning a Bwindi stay?

Send us your permit sector and dates, and we will tell you honestly whether Clouds fits — and if it does not, which lodge in your sector does. We book Bwindi lodges across all four sectors and all price tiers, so the recommendation is not tied to one property.
