Entebbe to Kidepo Flight: Airstrip, Times, and Safari Logistics

Kidepo Valley National Park is the most remote park in Uganda. It sits in the far north-east, in the Karamoja region, wedged between South Sudan to the north and Kenya to the east. By road from Entebbe or Kampala it is a long, hard drive of ten to twelve hours, much of it on murram, and most itineraries break it across two or three days.

A scheduled light aircraft flight from Entebbe or Kajjansi covers the same distance in about two hours. For travellers who want to see Kidepo without losing four days to the road, flying is the practical answer. This guide explains how the flights work, which airstrip you fly into, the transfer times, and what to expect once you land.

Why Fly to Kidepo Instead of Driving

The drive from Entebbe or Kampala to Kidepo is one of the longest in Uganda. The route typically runs north through Gulu and Kitgum, or east through Soroti and Moroto, and either way the final approach into the park is on murram.

  • Distance is roughly 700 to 750 km depending on the route chosen
  • Driving time is ten to twelve hours in good conditions, and longer after rain
  • Fuel stations and quality accommodation thin out considerably beyond Gulu
  • The murram sections in Karamoja can be slow and rough, particularly in the wet season

Flying removes all of that. You leave Entebbe in the morning, land at Kidepo before lunch, and can be on an afternoon game drive in the Narus Valley the same day. On a three or four day Kidepo itinerary, flying effectively gives you two extra days in the park.

Where Kidepo Valley National Park Is

Kidepo sits in the Kaabong district of the Karamoja sub-region, in Uganda’s far north-east. It borders South Sudan to the north and Kenya to the east, and it is the only Ugandan park with a genuinely dry, semi-arid savannah character comparable to the parks of northern Kenya and southern Sudan.

The park is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which also controls entry and issues park permits. The main gate is at Apoka, where the park headquarters and the main lodge are located.

Kidepo is famous for its isolation. On a typical game drive you may see no other vehicle for hours. It is also one of the best parks in Uganda for spotting cheetah, and one of the few places in the country where you can reliably see ostrich, kudu, and the Karamojong culture that gives the region its distinct character.

The Airstrip That Serves Kidepo

Kidepo has one main airstrip, at Apoka, next to the park headquarters. There is no alternative airstrip on the park boundary that handles scheduled light aircraft.

Kidepo (Apoka) Airstrip

Apoka Airstrip is a grass and murram strip beside the park headquarters and Apoka Safari Lodge. It is inside the park boundary, which means you land essentially inside the conservation area. Transfer times to the main lodges are short:

  • Apoka Safari Lodge: roughly 5 to 10 minutes
  • Narus Valley area lodges: 15 to 30 minutes
  • Southern Kidepo lodges: up to 1 hour, depending on location

Because the airstrip is inside the park, you effectively skip the long entry drive that road arrivals face. You land, clear park formalities at Apoka, and you are already in the middle of the park.

Departure Airports: Entebbe or Kajjansi

Flights to Kidepo depart from the two Kampala-area airports, the same as other domestic safari corridors.

Entebbe International Airport

Entebbe is the country’s international gateway, about 40 km south of Kampala. If you have just landed on a long-haul flight, Entebbe is where you will clear immigration and customs, so any onward domestic flight leaves from the same terminal. Procedures for arrivals and departures are set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda.

Because Kidepo is so far north, the flight from Entebbe benefits from already being south of the city. The routing is straightforward and does not cross Kampala traffic on the ground.

Kajjansi Airfield

Kajjansi is a small airfield about 20 km south of central Kampala, on the Entebbe road. If you are already staying in Kampala, Kajjansi is more convenient than Entebbe, and most light aircraft operators base their fleet there. That said, for Kidepo specifically, some operators route the flight to pick up from Entebbe first because of fuel and payload considerations. Confirm the departure airport with your operator when you book.

Flight Times and Typical Schedules

Domestic flights to Kidepo are operated by light aircraft. The route is long by Ugandan domestic standards, so operators pay close attention to payload, fuel, and weather when planning each departure.

  • Entebbe or Kajjansi to Kidepo (Apoka): approximately 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes direct
  • With an intermediate stop at Pakuba, Gulu, or Soroti: add 30 to 60 minutes

Most operators run one scheduled departure per day in each direction during peak season, and on some days the flight combines Kidepo with another airstrip such as Pakuba in Murchison Falls or Kasese on the western circuit. Ask your operator whether the flight is direct or has stops, because the difference between a direct flight and a two-stop routing is significant on a route this long.

Luggage Rules on Kidepo Flights

The rules here are the same as on any Ugandan light aircraft safari flight, and they are enforced at check-in. Because Kidepo is a long flight, payload is taken seriously.

  • Soft-sided bags only. Hard-shell suitcases cannot be loaded into the cargo compartments of most light aircraft. Use a duffel bag or soft holdall.
  • Strict weight limit per passenger. The exact figure is set by the operator and varies with aircraft type and flight distance. Confirm with your booking agent before departure.
  • Excess luggage can usually be stored. Most operators will hold your main suitcase at their base in Entebbe or Kajjansi for collection on your return.
  • Hand luggage is minimal. A small daypack or camera bag that fits under your seat is generally accepted.

Drones are heavily restricted inside Uganda’s national parks and require prior written authorisation from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Declare any specialist camera gear or drone equipment when booking, not at the airstrip.

Weather and Delays

Light aircraft in Uganda fly under visual flight rules, so weather is the main cause of delays. Kidepo’s climate is drier than most of Uganda, which helps, but the flight crosses a long stretch of the country and passes through several weather systems.

  • Morning departures are more reliable. Afternoon cloud build-up over the Karamoja escarpment can force cancellations or reroutes.
  • Rainy season delays are more common in March to May and October to November.
  • Build in a buffer day. If you are flying into Kidepo the day before your first game drive, this is rarely an issue. If you are flying on the morning of a scheduled activity, leave at least one buffer day.

If your flight is cancelled, operators usually reroute you on the next available flight or arrange a road transfer as a fallback. Because the road journey to Kidepo is so long, a road fallback is not really a fallback in practice. Travel insurance that covers domestic flight disruption is worth carrying on this route more than on any other.

What Happens When You Land

Apoka Airstrip is a simple grass and murram strip next to the park headquarters. There is no terminal building. You step off the aircraft, collect your bag from the wing, and meet your driver.

Park formalities are handled at the Apoka gate, which is right there. Your lodge or tour operator will have arranged your entry permits in advance, so this is usually just a signature and a briefing from the ranger.

From Apoka, transfer times are short. Apoka Safari Lodge is minutes away. The northern Narus Valley circuit is 15 to 30 minutes. Southern lodges may take up to an hour. The roads inside the park are murram and can be rough after rain, so vehicles are usually 4x4s with good clearance.

Best Time to Fly to Kidepo

Kidepo is a dry-season park. The best months for wildlife viewing are the dry seasons: December to February and June to September. During these windows, vegetation is thin, animals concentrate around the Narus Valley water sources, and the murram roads inside the park are firm.

The rainy season, roughly March to May and October to November, brings green landscapes and good birding but also soft roads, thicker vegetation, and more flight disruption. Game viewing is more scattered because water is available widely and animals do not need to concentrate.

You can visit Kidepo year-round, but if your priority is wildlife photography and clear sightings, fly in during one of the two dry windows.

Flying Versus Driving: Which Is Right for You

Fly if:

  • Your itinerary is short, three to four days total for Kidepo
  • You are combining Kidepo with Murchison Falls, Bwindi, or the western circuit
  • You have limited tolerance for long, rough drives
  • You want maximum time in the park for game drives and cultural visits

Drive if:

  • You have a long itinerary and want to see Karamoja’s landscapes slowly
  • You are travelling as a group and can share a vehicle
  • You want to stop at Gulu, Kitgum, or Moroto along the way
  • You want the flexibility to photograph the Karamoja escarpment en route

Many travellers fly in and drive out, or drive in and fly out, to get a taste of both. This works well on five to seven day itineraries that combine Kidepo with Murchison Falls or the northern Karamoja circuit.

How to Book Your Flight to Kidepo

Domestic safari flights are not sold on public booking platforms the way international airline seats are. You have two routes.

  1. Book directly with the operator. Several licensed Ugandan operators serve the Kidepo corridor. Schedules vary by season and demand, and some operators only run this route on certain days or with minimum passenger numbers.
  2. Book through your tour operator. This is what most travellers do. The flight is bundled into your safari package alongside park fees, lodge, and ground transfers, so you have one point of contact if anything changes.

If you book independently, confirm three things before paying: the exact airstrip, the weight limit for luggage, and the cancellation policy for weather delays. The Uganda Tourism Board maintains a directory of licensed operators and travel businesses, which is useful for cross-referencing whether a company you are considering is registered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the flight from Entebbe to Kidepo?

About two hours to two hours thirty minutes for a direct flight to Apoka Airstrip. Add thirty to sixty minutes if the flight has an intermediate stop at Pakuba, Gulu, or Soroti.

Which airstrip serves Kidepo Valley National Park?

Apoka Airstrip, next to the park headquarters. It is inside the park boundary, so you land essentially inside the conservation area and skip the long entry drive that road arrivals face.

Can I fly directly to Kidepo from another country?

No. Apoka Airstrip is a domestic strip only. International arrivals must clear immigration at Entebbe first, then connect onward on a domestic flight or road transfer.

How much luggage can I bring on a Kidepo flight?

Operators set their own weight limits, usually well under a commercial airline allowance. Because Kidepo is a long flight, payload matters more than on shorter routes. Soft-sided bags are mandatory. Confirm the exact figure with your operator before you fly.

Are Kidepo flights reliable?

Yes in the dry season, with caveats in the rainy season. Morning departures are far more reliable than afternoon ones, and a road fallback from a cancelled Kidepo flight is not really practical, so build in a buffer day.

Is it worth flying to Kidepo instead of driving?

For most travellers, yes. The road journey is ten to twelve hours each way, so flying saves you two to four days of your trip. That is time you can spend in the park itself, on game drives, or on cultural visits to Karamojong communities.
